| — | - regarding a dark period in the life of Francisco_Goya |
I’ve been reading Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead recently, and it brought up a lot of my anger at people who don’t live up to their potential, and specifically at Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre, who have epic, beautiful, amazing ideals that I feel they’ve recently failed to live up to.
Mostly I think it’s high time I own my experience, my opinions and my anger, and stand up for what I believe in, and what I can’t tolerate:
- I hate to be forced to admit that Zen Zen Zo’s performance of Zeitgeist was somehow an accident, as proven by the mediocre shows they have performed since (with the possible exception of The Tempest).
- I hate to see brilliant people tie themselves to a company that uses them poorly.
- I hate to see Mel Budd wasted and trampled on and overlooked in Cabaret.
- I hate to see performers like Emma Dean and Dale Thorburn become saving graces for poorly-executed shows like My Sublime Shadow and Cabaret.
- I hate to see a company that thrives on its ensemble nature then turn around and all but destroy that ensemble through a lack of consideration by its new artistic directors - and a lack of protection by its old one.
- I hate to see the time and commitment of its volunteers - particularly its younger ones - go wasted and unthanked, but always demanded more of.
- I hate to see people put up with terrible breaches of integrity for the sake of a few elements of true brilliance.
- I hate that I wasted my time trying to clean up the messes that I saw, only to have more created.
- I hate that I played nice, that I didn’t have the courage to own what I saw and what I believed.
- I hate that I don’t see anyone else standing up for themselves for fear of retribution.
I don’t like that this will potentially remain so for the life of the company, but I also don’t think it’s my responsibility to meddle in other people’s affairs unsolicited. Perhaps some people from the company will read this, or perhaps they will for some reason seek my opinion in the future. I certainly hope so.
